interest and satisfaction, saying coldly, “So unless he’s got a twin

brother that you forgot to mention, or some way of actually being in

two places at once, then I think we can safely assume that Mr. Hawks

is innocent of the arson attack committed last night at quarter to

midnight, clear across town from where he actually lives.” He cocked

a challenging eyebrow. “Or are you actually going to be dumb enough

to call me a liar?” He waited patiently for a moment, eyes taking in

every tic on Dawson’s suddenly nervous face. “You have exactly

twenty minutes to go pick up the witness that placed Mr. Hawks at the

scene of the crime, get him to your office, and have him ready for me

to interview—and trust me when I say that you do not want to fail me

on this.” He stepped back and jerked his head. “Move it.”

Dawson and Iris moved it.

Cody waited until the door swung shut behind them and then

walked slowly to Luke’s side. He shoved his hands in his pockets to

stop himself reaching out the way he wanted and said quietly, “You

sure you’re okay?” He glowered around the enthralled room until

everyone but Jeannie looked away in embarrassment or shame at his

challenging expression and then glanced down at Luke’s tight, angry

face. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Biting out the words as though they physically pained

him, Luke met his eyes briefly before looking away. A dull flush

deepened the already-pink coloring of his skin and he took a step back

and away from the protective lean of Cody’s body. “Yeah. Thanks.”

“Not a problem.” Andy joined them, far too cheerful considering

recent events. “That’s the most fun I’ve had in this town since we

rolled up. Okay, stud.” He clapped an encouraging hand on Cody’s

shoulder. “We’ve got some more fun ahead of us. Let’s go see if we

can get fucker to actually cry before we’re done.” He tipped his hat to
